9-1-1 TELECOMMUNICATOR WEEK – APRIL 14-20, 2024
(HOUSTON, TX) Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network (GHC 9-1-1) announces that National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week is April 14-20, 2024—an opportunity for 9-1-1 telecommunicators to be recognized for the lifesaving work they provide to the over 4 million texts and voice calls throughout Harris and Fort Bend Counties.
Public safety telecommunicators are the “unseen first responders” who remain calm and professional to address the needs of callers during their emergencies requiring police, fire or medical responders. These telecommunicators provide a calm, reassuring voice to callers who are often upset, panicked or confused. They work especially hard, continuing their dedication serving their residents and connecting them with emergency responders.
There are over 1,200 dedicated 9-1-1 calltakers working in 37 different 9-1-1 call centers throughout Harris and Fort Bend Counties. GHC 9-1-1 Board and Staff are grateful for the efforts by all 9-1-1 telecommunicators at each of the 9-1-1 call centers. A resolution was signed by the GHC 9-1-1 Board of Managers recognizing 9-1-1 Telecommunicator Week and shared with the 9-1-1 call centers and their jurisdictions.” During this week, public safety agencies and local jurisdictions plan different events throughout the week to show their appreciation and recognize staff 9-1-1-1 personnel for the amazing tasks they perform daily.
To show our appreciation for these local heroes and assist the 9-1-1 call centers with recruiting, social media users will begin seeing 9-1-1 Telecommunicator Recruitment ads throughout Harris and Fort Bend Counties. The “Will You Answer the Call?” awareness ads will be on social media platforms through April 30th and will inform residents about current 9-1-1 telecommunications officer open positions at 9-1-1 call centers throughout the Greater Houston area.

A few of the qualities of a 9-1-1 telecommunicator include the ability to multi-task and prioritize, maintain composure in emergency situations, decision-making skills, ability to listen and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
