Message ADMISSION CONTROL RECOGNIZES YOUNG HEROES

Six high school graduates in Buda, TX, dedicated eight weeks of their summer volunteering through the AmeriCorps VISTA national community service program to give back to Admission Control, an Austin non-profit organization that provides college-prep services to economically disadvantaged high school students and from which they had personally received assistance for the past two years. Soon-to-be college students CLAUDIA HERNANDEZ, JAYCE JOHNSON, CHANCE JUAREZ, EILIANA MARTINEZ, ALEX MATTIS, and JENNIBETH RODRIGUEZ improved the organization’s volunteer and recruiting programs as well as made the college admissions process more accessible for future Admission Control program participants.

The young men and women volunteered 40 hours each week with local St. Edward’s University sophomore JAIME HANKS, Western Washington University graduate ALBERTO MEJIA, and another student volunteer, JOSH HOWARD, as part of the Summer Associates program. The group worked collectively from local high school Academy@Hays researching college admissions information and networking with community organizations. They worked in teams on different projects, in which they created three presentations for elementary, middle, and high school students (for which they recruited eight student volunteer presenters), organized a calendar of over 720 hours of volunteer opportunities for Admission Control students for the 2005-2006 school year, and compiled over 79 college and scholarship information sheets for students and coaches to reference. ~
