As the new lanes are completed, traffic will be switched to the new roadway over the course of the next eight weeks. Carpoolers, vanpoolers and motorcycles will utilize the regular I-10 mainlanes during this closure and are encouraged to prepare for traffic delays during afternoon commutes. Special accommodations for METRO to maintain bus operations within a closed lane in the active construction area will be provided. HOV service for carpools, vanpools and motorcycles will resume in late October as part of the new Katy Tollway/Managed Lanes operation. FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2008 CONTACT: Tanya McWashington - Katy Freeway Public Information Officer 281-589-5969 / 713-834-2592 or email: mcwashington@pbworld.com RELIEF FOR DRIVERS AT I-10/BELTWAY 8 INTERCHANGE “Final Direct Connector Ramps Open for Service This Weekend” (Houston) The much anticipated completion of the I-10/Beltway 8 Interchange will occur this weekend as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to open the final two direct connector ramps on Sunday, August 24. Over the last 16 months, drivers and residents in the vicinity of the I-10/Katy Freeway and Beltway 8 have endured a multitude of ramp and lane closures, varying detour routes and almost nightly construction activities while TxDOT contractor Williams Brothers Construction demolished and reconstructed all eight direct connector ramps as part of the Katy Freeway Reconstruction Program. TxDOT along with its contractor’s commitment to delivering these transportation improvements as quickly as possible coupled with the public’s patience and flexibility created the opportunity for this originally scheduled two year construction period to be reduced significantly. Monday morning drivers destined to Beltway 8 north- or southbound will now have direct access from I-10 eastbound almost 8 months ahead of schedule. With the opening of these direct connector ramps, the I-10 eastbound entrance ramp from Kirkwood will also re-open. Also this weekend, the I-10/Katy Freeway eastbound mainlanes throughout the project will be in its final configuration providing a minimum of four continuous through lanes with as many as eight lanes at key locations. Drivers have been experiencing reduced travel times when traveling eastbound as a result of this newly opened roadway. “The improved flow of traffic that drivers are experiencing on I-10 eastbound is a clear example of what is anticipated throughout the corridor when our contractor opens the new I-10 westbound roadway,” said Gary Trietsch, TxDOT Houston District Engineer. With the completion of the eastbound mainlanes, the Inner Katy Connector ramp will open on Monday, August 25 after being closed for nearly three years during construction. Drivers who were previously using Old Katy Road from the Northwest Transit Center will now have direct access from the 290 Northwest HOV lane to the I-10 eastbound HOV lane as well as from the Northwest Transit Center to I-10 eastbound. Operation hours for the Inner Katy Connector are 5 AM to 11 AM and 2 PM to 8 PM, Monday – Friday. As construction activities near completion on this project, drivers are reminded that the I-10/Katy HOV lane will close on Monday, September 1 for final striping of the I-10 westbound mainlanes. FRIDAY, JULY 11, 2008 CONTACT: Tanya McWashington - Katy Freeway Public Information Officer 281-589-5969 /713-834-2592 or email: McWashington@pbworld.com I-10 EASTBOUND MAINLANES WIDE OPEN FROM BINGLE/VOSS INTO DOWNTOWN “Major Traffic Switch This Weekend Opens Portions of I-10/Katy Freeway in Final Configuration” (Houston) – This weekend (July 11-13), Williams Brothers Construction will perform its final I-10/Katy Freeway eastbound traffic switch on the Katy Freeway Reconstruction project referred to as Contract E1, providing drivers the long awaited added capacity on the eastbound mainlanes from Bingle/Voss Road into downtown Houston. Along with opening the mainlanes, the contractor will open the new I-10 eastbound entrance ramps from Bingle, Campbell and Chimney Rock and the new I-10 eastbound exit ramps to Chimney Rock, Silber and N. Post Oak. This weekend’s switch is the second segment of on-going final eastbound striping activities taking place throughout the month phasing the opening of I-10 eastbound into its final configuration throughout the corridor. With the opening of the new roadway this weekend, drivers will have the full experience of the added capacity provided as part of the Katy Freeway Reconstruction Program that includes four (4) continuous general purpose (freeway) lanes with as many as eight (8) lanes in some areas with the addition of auxiliary lanes for egress and ingress. Additionally, for the first time motorists will be able to see how the new toll managed lanes, which will open later this year for use by mass transit, high occupancy vehicles (HOV) and tollway riders, will look and function on the I-10 West corridor. As a result of very strategic planning and synchronized phasing, current HOV operations to and from the Addicks Park & Ride and Northwest Transit Center will be maintained during the final eastbound striping activities with only the closure of the Gessner slip ramp. This weekend’s traffic switch will require alternate lanes of I-10 eastbound between Bingle/Voss Road and I-610/West Loop and the I-10/Katy Freeway eastbound direct connector ramps to north- and southbound I-610/West Loop to be closed beginning 9 PM, Friday, July 11 until 9 AM, Saturday, July 12. I-10 eastbound traffic destined to north- or southbound I-610/West Loop will detour to the Washington Ave./Westcott St. exit and U-turn through the signalized intersection to enter the I-10 westbound mainlanes to access I-610/West Loop north- and southbound. Beginning 9 AM, Saturday, July 12 until 9 AM, Sunday, July 13 there will be a total closure of I-10/Katy Freeway eastbound at I-610/West Loop. I-10 eastbound traffic will detour to I-610 southbound, exit Woodway, and U-turn to enter the I-610 northbound mainlanes to access I-10 eastbound. Respective entrance and exit ramps in the vicinity will also be temporarily closed to facilitate the traffic switch. This weekend’s traffic switch marks the completion of another major construction activity bringing the Katy Freeway Reconstruction Program closer to its final completion which is scheduled for October 2008.
